Compression Load Cell

What are the benefits of BoltSafe compression load cells?

  • BoltSafe compression load cells are more compact and less expensive than other load cells using e.g. strain gauges or piezoelectric technology.

  • The compression is measured across the entire surface of the ring instead of across just a few pressure points.

  • Calibration is done within the load cell and there is no calibration needed at the readout equipment, not even when you are switching between readout methods.

  • Our compression load cells send out only digital signals and can withstand very low and high loads from 18 kN to 3000 kN.

  • The sensors can be used for multiple purposes where there is a need for measuring compression and load, such as bolt load and forces within constructions.

  • BoltSafe products are drift free and have almost no creep effect. We assure a maximum deviation of 1% of the full scale after factory calibration.

  • They are dust free and water resistant because they meet the IP66 rating.

  • We offer a variety of readout methods to suit various wishes and situations.

What is a compression load cell?

A compression load cell is used for measuring a pushing or squashing force, generally beneath or between the object that needs measuring or weighing. The internal workings of compression load cells differ based on the chosen type and technology. They are actually force transducers that convert force into electrical signals that can be measured and standardized, so that users can read and record the data. The electrical signal changes proportionally with the increasing compression on the load cell. Measuring this compression is done very accurately and is usually caused by the deformations that occur on the load cell when it is being compressed. Measuring compression is useful in a lot of industries, where there is a demand for accurately knowing the load or weight. The most common used compression load cells in the market use strain gauge technology, but this is not the only available technology within the compression load cell range. BoltSafe for instance, uses magnetoelastic technology to determine the compression, in this case specifically the bolt load. Our technology measures the changes in the magnetic field.

How does our compression load cell work?

BoltSafe compression load cells are specifically designed for measuring and monitoring bolt load, but are also usable as a weighing device for other applications where load or compression needs to be measured. Examples of these applications are in temporary construction and for Structural Health Monitoring, where they monitor the load in the construction to make sure that the construction doesn’t collapse. BoltSafe products can be used both during assembly and over a longer period of time. Precisely knowing the bolt load enhances safety and control in bolted constructions and makes the joints more dependable.

When using a BoltSafe sensor for bolt load measuring, the compression load cell is used as a washer and placed on the non-driven side of a bolted connection, preferably under a nut. When the bolt is being tightened and force is being applied, minor deformations of the stainless steel washer occur. The changes in electrical resistance which are caused by these deformations can then be measured. This data is used to determine the bolt load very precisely at any chosen time. Our product range offers two types of compression load cells, the CMS sensor (for continuous monitoring) and PMS sensor (for periodic monitoring). Both are available in a regular version and a stronger version that can withstand 15% more load while the compact dimensions remain the same.
