What are the benefits of BoltSafe digital load cells?

  • Because magnetoelastic technology is used, BoltSafe load cells are more compact and less expensive than other technologies such as strain gauges.
  • BoltSafe sensors send out only digital signals and are able to withstand very low and high loads from 18 kN to 3000 kN.
  • The (bolt) load is measured across the entire surface of the ring (washer) instead of using just a few pressure points.
  • We calibrate our digital load cells inside the load cell, which means there is no calibration needed at the end of the readout equipment. Not even when switching between different readout methods!
  • Because they have almost no creep effect, they are drift free. We assure a maximum deviation of 5% of the full scale in any possible circumstance.

What is a digital load cell?

A digital load cell is initially a force transducer, which is used for measuring force. It converts a force into an electrical signal, that can be digitally measured and then standardized. This enables users to read and record the load data. There are many different (digital) load cells available in the market, whose inner workings differ based on the chosen type. They are able to convert many different forces, such as compression, torque, tension and pressure. The electrical signal changes proportionally to the force that is applied to the load cell. Digital load cells are widely used in many fields and industries, because they can measure weight, load and other forces very accurately. They are found wherever there is a demand for precision and accuracy. There are a couple of available technologies in the market to use in load cells. The most common ones are strain gauges and piezoelectric technology. However, BoltSafe uses a different technology in their digital load cells: magnetoelastic technology. Our sensors measure the changes in the magnetic field.

How does the BoltSafe digital load cell work?

Digital load cells by BoltSafe are specially designed for measuring and monitoring bolt load. They are able to do this in bolted constructions, both during assembly and over time. This knowledge gives better control over the construction, enhances safety and makes joints more dependable. The BoltSafe digital load cell is placed on the non-driven side of a bolted connection, preferably under a nut. When the bolt is being tightened, forces are applied to it. This results in minor deformations of the stainless steel washer. Our digital sensors are able to measure the change in electrical resistance caused by these deformations. This is the data we use to determine the (bolt) load very precisely at any given moment.

Our digital load cells can be used for many different purposes, examples are for Structural Health Monitoring and in temporary constructions. Here they will keep the constructions from collapsing by measuring the load on critical elements. We offer load cells for continuous and periodic monitoring, both in a regular version and a stronger version that withstands 15% more load while keeping the same compact dimensions. BoltSafe sensors send out only digital signals and are therefore the perfect example of a digital load cell.
