Because BoltSafe uses magnetoelastic technology, our donut load cells are more compact and less expensive than variants that use strain gauges, piezoelectric technology or a similar technology.

The (bolt) load is measured across the entire surface of the ring (donut) instead of using just a few pressure points.

Calibration is done inside the load cell and there is no calibration needed at the end of the readout equipment, not even when you’re switching between readout methods.

BoltSafe sensors send out only digital signals and can be used with very low and high loads from 18 kN to 3000 kN.

Our donut load cells have almost no creep effect and are thus drift free. A maximum deviation of 1% of the full scale is assured after factory calibration.

What is a donut load cell?
A load cell is a force transducer that is used for measuring force. A donut load cell is a load cell with a hole in the middle, which is why it resembles a donut. Therefore, the (nick)name donut load cell was born. The load cells are able to convert forces into electrical signals that can then be measured and standardized. This enables the users to read and record the data. If the force applied to the load cell increases, the electrical signal changes proportionally. There are different donut load cells available in the market, whose inner workings differ based on the chosen type. Examples of used technologies are strain gauges, piezoelectric cells, pneumatic cells and hydraulic cells. Many different forces can be converted, including compression, tension, torque and pressure. Donut load cells find their applications in many fields and industries, wherever there is a demand for precision and accuracy. They are widely used because they can measure weight and other forces very accurately. The advantage of the donut shape is that it can be used around a bolt, to measure bolt load. How does the BoltSafe donut load cell work?
BoltSafe donut load cells are specifically designed for measuring and monitoring bolt load in bolted constructions, both during assembly and over time. Knowing the bolt load enhances safety, makes joints more dependable and improves the control over the construction. Place a BoltSafe donut load cell on the non-driven side of a bolted connection, preferably under a nut. The forces that are applied to the bolt when the bolt is being tightened, will result in minor deformations of the stainless steel washer. These deformations cause changes in the electrical resistance, which are then constantly measured. This is the data we use to determine the bolt load very precisely at any moment.
BoltSafe donut load cells are not only capable of measuring bolt load, but also other load, weight and forces. Examples of applications are Structural Health Monitoring and in temporary constructions, where the load cells are used to make sure that the construction doesn’t collapse. Our donut load sensors are available in two versions, the CMS sensor for continuous monitoring and the PMS sensor for periodic monitoring. Both are available in a standard stainless steel version and a stronger version that can withstand 15% more load while keeping the same compact dimensions.
