Force Transducer

Benefits of a BoltSafe force transducer

  • Using magnetoelastic technology instead of strain gauges, piezoelectric technology or a similar method causes our force transducers to be more compact and less expensive.

  • BoltSafe load sensors measure the load across the entire surface of the ring instead of using only a couple of pressure points.

  • Calibration is taken care of at the side of the sensor once, absolutely no calibration is needed at the side of the readout method. Even when you’re switching between different readout methods, this is not necessary. This is a great benefit compared to other force transducers.

  • Our sensors have almost no creep effect and are drift free. We can assure a maximum deviation of 1% of the full scale after factory calibration.

  • They can withstand very low and very high loads from 18 kN to 3000 kN and send out only digital signals.

  • Meeting the IP66 rating makes them dust free and also water resistant.

  • Looking for readout methods? We offer a variety so there is always a method to suit your specific situation, wish and application.

What is a force transducer?

A force transducer is a sensor that converts a load, pressure, weight, compression or tension into an electrical output signal. This signal can then be measured, converted and standardized. Increasing the applied force to the sensor changes the electrical signal proportionally. A force transducer is also called a force sensor. There are many different kinds of force transducers, whose inner workings differ based on the chosen type. All that are able to measure and transform a kind of force, can be called a force transducer. The most common ones in the market use strain gauges or piezoelectric technology, although these are not the only possible measuring technologies available. Any measuring technology that can determine and measure force being applied to a sensor can be called a force transducer. Most measuring instruments are used in combination with a readout method or Data Acquisition System (DAQ) to monitor and visualize the measured force. Force transducers are used in many industries, wherever there is a demand for accuracy and precision.

Force transducers by BoltSafe

BoltSafe offers a force transducer that is specially designed to measure and monitor bolt load. Both during assembly and over time, usually in a bolted construction. Contrary to most force transducers available, BoltSafe uses magnetoelastic technology instead of strain gauges or piezoelectric technology. In this way, they measure the changes in the magnetic field instead. When using a BoltSafe force transducer, safety is enhanced, bolted joints are more dependable and better control over the construction is assured.

Our sensor is placed on the non-driven side of a bolted connection, preferably under a nut. As force is being applied to the sensor while tightening the bolt, minor deformations of the stainless steel washer occur. We use these deformations to measure the changes in the electrical resistance, in order to determine the bolt load at any given moment. Another application of our products is in temporary construction, where they can monitor the load in the construction to make sure that the construction doesn’t collapse. This functionality is also very useful for Structural Health Monitoring.
