Piezoelectric sensor alternative

Why choose a BoltSafe sensor instead of a piezoelectric sensor?

  • BoltSafe sensors are very compact (have a low clearance) and are less expensive.

  • Our sensors measure the bolt load across the entire surface of the ring, instead of using just a few pressure points.

  • Because the calibration is done in the load sensor, no calibration is needed at the side of the readout equipment. Not even when you decide to switch between different readout methods!

  • BoltSafe sensors are able to withstand very low and very high loads from 18 kN to 3000 kN.

  • The sensors are drift free and have almost no creep effect. We assure a maximum deviation of 1% of the full scale when using the washers in the field after factory calibration.

  • Our load sensors send out only digital signals, which can be converted to an industrial standard when using some of our readout methods.

  • Since our sensors meet the IP66 rating, they are dust free and water resistant.

  • We offer a wide variety of readout methods to suit many different situations.

What is a piezoelectric sensor?

A piezoelectric sensor is a sensor that uses the piezoelectric effect to measure changes in pressure, strain, force, temperature or acceleration by converting them to electrical change. Applying a force to the piezoelectric sensor generates an electrical change across the faces of the crystal. This change can be measured as a voltage proportional to the pressure. Applying a voltage to the material will cause it to change shape, resulting in an inverse piezoelectric effect. The charge across the sensor will unfortunately leak away over time due to imperfect insulation, internal sensor resistance, attached electronics and other reasons. This means piezoelectric sensors are not normally suitable for measuring static pressure. The output signal will gradually drop to zero, even when constant pressure is applied.

BoltSafe as an alternative for piezoelectric sensors

BoltSafe sensors use a different technology than piezoelectric sensors. Our sensors measure changes in the magnetic field instead, using magnetoelastic technology. This makes BoltSafe sensors very suitable for measuring static and constant pressure, in contrast to piezoelectric sensors. Our load sensors are specially designed to measure and monitor bolt load during assembly and over time. With this knowledge, safety is enhanced, bolted joints are more dependable and better control over the bolted construction is assured.

BoltSafe sensors are used as washers and are placed on the non-driven side of a bolted connection, preferably under a nut. When the bolt is being tightened, the applied force results in a minor deformation of the stainless steel washer. The changes in electrical resistance caused by these deformations are then measured by the sensor. We use this data to determine the bolt load at any given moment. BoltSafe sensors can be used for more applications than measuring bolt load. They are also suitable for use in temporary construction, where they check the load in the construction to make sure the construction does not collapse.
